EXPLORA biotechnology plastics | PET degradation breakthrough

The EXPLORA biotechnology plastics research was presented on March 5–6, 2025, at the II International Seminar on Biotechnology Applied to the Plastics Sector in Valencia, Spain. This event, organized by AIMPLAS – Technological Institute of Plastics, gathered leading experts from research and industry to share progress on sustainable solutions for plastic waste.

ITENE, coordinator of the EXPLORA project, showcased the consortium’s early achievements in using extremophile-derived enzymes for sustainable plastic degradation.

What EXPLORA shared at the event

During the seminar, ITENE introduced the audience to one of EXPLORA’s key scientific directions: the discovery of acidic polyesterases produced by aquatic extremophiles. These enzymes can break down PET plastics in acidic conditions, where most traditional recycling methods fail.

For example, researchers explained how targeted bioprospecting in environments like Rio Tinto has led to the identification of promising microorganisms. These organisms are adapted to extreme acidity and may be able to produce enzymes with high efficiency and industrial value.

In addition, the team highlighted how EXPLORA applies modern biotechnology to turn these microbial traits into usable tools for recycling and circular economy applications.

Why this innovation matters

Plastic pollution continues to be a major environmental challenge. As recycling rates remain low for many plastic types, new solutions are urgently needed. For this reason, biodegradation using enzymes represents a powerful alternative.

The enzymes studied in EXPLORA have the potential to:

  • Break down plastics under harsh industrial conditions

  • Enable more efficient recycling of PET

  • Reduce the environmental impact of plastic waste

  • Support the transition to a circular bioeconomy

Furthermore, these innovations align with both the European Green Deal and the goals of the Horizon Europe programme, focusing on sustainability and industrial transformation.

EXPLORA’s broader role in sustainability

The EXPLORA project is a Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Action (RIA) with support from SERI in Switzerland. It brings together 13 expert partners from across Europe. The project explores extreme aquatic environments, such as acidic rivers and polar regions, to discover new bioactive compounds.

By participating in key events like this AIMPLAS seminar, EXPLORA fosters dialogue with industries, researchers, and decision-makers who are vital to scaling these innovations.
