The EXPLORA project launch took place on December 16–17, 2024, at ITENE’s premises in Paterna, Spain. This event marked the beginning of a groundbreaking Horizon Europe initiative dedicated to exploring aquatic extremophiles for sustainable industrial applications.
With a strong focus on innovation, environmental responsibility, and biodiversity, EXPLORA sets the tone for Europe’s leadership in blue biotechnology.
What Is the EXPLORA Project?
EXPLORA (Grant Agreement No. 101181841) is a research and innovation project under the Horizon Europe framework. Its central objective is to explore two of the most extreme aquatic ecosystems on Earth:
-
Rio Tinto in Spain, known for its acidic waters and metal-rich environment
-
The Antarctic Region, characterized by cold-adapted microbial communities
These ecosystems are expected to host unique microorganisms capable of producing compounds such as:
-
Novel antimicrobials
-
Antioxidant molecules
-
Sialylated extracellular polymeric substances (EPS)
-
Plastic-degrading enzymes (polyesterases)
The project’s total budget is approximately €5 million.
Highlights from the Kick-Off meeting
The two-day launch event marked the alignment of all partners on strategic objectives and work plans. The meeting included:
-
Definition of milestones and deliverables for all work packages (WP1 to WP7)
-
In-depth discussion of legal frameworks, including the Nagoya Protocol and Antarctic Treaty requirements
-
Identification of innovation opportunities and cross-work package integration.
This initial gathering laid the foundation for a collaborative, transparent, and impactful project.
Why aquatic extremophiles matter
Extreme environments often contain microorganisms that have adapted to harsh conditions such as acidity, cold, and high salinity. These organisms may produce rare biomolecules with high industrial value.
However, sampling and researching in such settings requires tailored technologies, sustainable practices, and strict compliance with international regulations. EXPLORA addresses these challenges with innovative methods, from AI-assisted bioprospecting to customized sampling tools.
